EPI ISO 50001 Lead Auditor Certification

Certification Objectives


The EPI ISO 50001 Lead Auditor certification will prove the competence of the auditors, and achieve the following objectives:



Address the lack of skilled and trained personnel available to conduct ISO 50001 certification audits.



Reduce the burden on Certification Bodies to prove the competence of their auditors by incorporating the ISO standard requirements for both ISO 50003 and 17021-1.



Ensure that ISO 50001 is being implemented consistently nationally and internationally, so that governments can use the standard as a key tool to measure progress towards energy and climate goals.



Demonstrate the value of energy management systems (EnMS) business practices to industrial, commercial, and public sector organizations to impact international acceptance of ISO 50001 and other important energy related standards.



Enable Personnel Certification Bodies (PCBs) to offer a turnkey certification program and attain ISO / IEC 17024 accreditation by maintaining these Certification Products under strict control of the EPI / IEnMP.



This credential ensures the qualified candidate is competent in the following ISO 50003 technical areas: buildings, building complexes, and industry – light to medium. Within the context of the audit plan, the ISO 50001 Lead Auditor will be able to:


Plan, lead and manage an ISO 50001 audit team effectively to ensure the audit objectives are met.



Conduct the ISO 50001 audit in conformance with ISO 50003 requirements.



Assess conformance to ISO 50001- Energy management systems standard, which includes confirming continual improvement of energy performance and any additional organizational requirements.



Document and report audit findings based upon objective evidence.



Effectively manage the relationship with the client and the auditee.



Communicate, justify, and take responsibility for the audit results both verbally and in a written report to the client.


Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience

Option 1

Technical Academic degree
with 4 Years of Management System Experience

Option 2

Non-Technical Academic Degree with 5 Years of Management System Experience

Option 3

Technical Vocation Degree
with 6 Years of Management System Experience

Option 4

Other degree
with 7 Years of Management System Experience

AND – A minimum of 15 on-site audit days achieved through a combination of:
  • Audit days as an ISO 50001 audit team member (minimum 5 audit days)
  • Audit days as an ISO 14001 lead auditor (audit days must be within the last 5 years)

* Management system experience is defined as implementing or auditing a management system standard (ISO or equivalent).
* Energy management experience is defined as energy efficiency experience in facilities, projects, or programs.

Existing Credentials

Through December 31, 2015, candidates applying to this ISO 50001 Lead Auditor certification program who have an existing ISO 50001 Lead Auditor or ISO 14001 Lead Auditor credential meet all of the prerequisites to take the exam.

Exam Preparation


The scope of the ISO 50001 Lead Auditor exam encompasses the following:
  • Plan, lead and manage an ISO 50001 audit team effectively to ensure the audit objectives are met;
  • Conduct the ISO 50001 audit in conformance with ISO 50003 requirements;
  • Assess conformance to ISO 50001- Energy management systems standard, which includes confirming continual improvement of energy performance and any additional organizational requirements;
  • Document and report audit findings based upon objective evidence;
  • Effectively manage the relationship with the client and the auditee; and
  • Communicate, justify, and take responsibility for the audit results both verbally and in a written report to the client.

  • Scratch paper and pencils
  • It is suggested that you bring a hand held calculator to use during the exam. You may use any non-programmable scientific, business/financial or graphing calculator.
